Fiona Kumfor at the International Society for Frontotemporal Dementias Conference

Dementia Law Network co-founder Fiona Kumfor was invited to present at the International Society for Frontotemporal Dementias Conference in Lille, France in November 2022.

Her talk, “A prospective study of criminal risk behaviours in frontotemporal dementia” was shared during the caregiver’s day, and was simultaneously translated into French, Italian and German.

During the talk, Fiona focused on how behavioural changes in frontotemporal dementia, such as loss of empathy, apathy, disinhibition, social cognition and executive dysfunction may lead to inappropriate interactions with the criminal justice system. She also discussed how new criminal risk behaviours may be a potential indicator of frontotemporal dementia, and why there is a need to educate police and frontline responders, as well as work closely with people in the legal system, given the potential implications for sentencing.
