Dementia capability for the legal profession resources

The Faculty of Law, University of Technology Sydney, offers online short courses that are relevant for any legal practitioner wanting to know more about dementia and how to work effectively with clients to promote their rights and prevent problems.

The courses draw on the latest research and provide insights from medical and legal practitioners and dementia advocates. The courses can be completed individually or as a comprehensive training series:

  1. Understanding Dementia: Facts and Foundations

  2. Planning Ahead: Focus on Advance Care Planning

  3. Elder Abuse: Strategies for Prevention

Each course requires up to 2 hours of self-paced study. Interactive features enable participants to self-assess their learning, work through scenarios and share their experiences in discussion posts.

The courses include current, best practice resources designed for practitioners to use in their own professional practice and to share with clients. Throughout the courses, participants are prompted to compile resources into their own Dementia-Capable Toolkit.

Dementia and research participation resources

Visit the StepUp for Dementia Research website to learn more about taking part in research, including making an advance research directive (ARD). An ARD is a document where you write down your wishes about being involved in health-related research in the future. If you become unwell and are not able to make your own decision about being part of a study, your Directive will help people understand your wishes and preferences.
